Course Description
The General Art Class will meet fourth hour from 11:08 to 12:10 in the art room 6210. The instructor is Mrs. Bigelow. The student is expected to bring a pencil to class everyday. Students are required to keep class notes, complete written class assignments, complete class art projects, participate in all class activities, take review tests, and take a trimester exam. The class is set up as a twelve week trimester class with .25 credit given after the first six weeks of the trimester is completed and an additional .25 credit which is given at the completion of the twelve week trimester. Therefore, each trimester a possible .50 credit can be earned. Good attendance is required. When absent, all class work must be made up within one week of the absence. Students are responsible for asking for missed class work.
The class theme is “We use art to communicate our thoughts and feelings.” The students will study the seven elements of design that artists use to create an artwork: line, shape, space, color, value, texture, and form. The course will explore a variety of materials, techniques, and famous artworks to examine how the elements of design are incorporated into an artwork. The students will work with colored pencils, pastels, scratchboard, metal tooling, linoleum block printmaking, watercolor paint, dream catcher, acrylic paint, collage, calligraphy, perspective, sculpture, and Origami. The students will study works of art by Andrew Wyeth, Kathe Kollwitz, Piet Mondrian, Romare Bearden, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Bridget Riley, Keith Herring, and, Diego Rivera. The students will study art from diverse cultures: Native American, African American, Hispanic, South East Asian, Australian, and European.
Project Grading Rubric
Projects are rated by the following criteria with each item being worth ten points:
Your report card grade is based upon two areas:
30% for daily assignments
70% for assessment projects and written assessments
Classroom grade Your report card grade will be
A 100-94 1 Goes beyond the requirements (mastered 90% or more of the assessment standards)
A- 93-90
B+ 89-87 2 Meets the requirements (mastered 80% to 89% of assessment standards)
B 86-83
B- 82-80
C+ 79-77 3 Shows some understanding (mastered 70% to 79% of assessment standards)
C 76-73
C- 72-70
D+ 69-67 4 Shows limited understanding of the concept (mastered 60% to 69% of assessment standards)
D 66-63
D- 62-60
F 59-0 Can not complete the task or skill independently (met less than 60% of assessment standards)
